Once mure lhe Chamber uf Commerce lias decided to approach the Government, with the view of having this district represented in liie Legislative Council. At the meeting last evening, the Mayor said there were many suitable men in the uisirlct, and it was not right that the
Governiuem should ignore the claims of the Hast Coast. Mr Whinray said he approached the subject with great trepidation, because lie aid not believe in unduly worrying or importuning ine ‘‘powers that he.” lie considered that Lite district, was at least entitled to one representative in the Council. 11 Despite what the Government, organs say in regard to no more appointments to tne Legislative Council being made beiore the eiose of the session,” remarked Mr Petrie at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last evening, ”we might any morning' open me Gisborne Times and discover that other appointments have been made.” We agree with the speakers at last evening s meeting that Gisborne must iiusiie ii it wains a representative in the.
Upper House. Rrobabiy the trouble the Government is experiencing is
that we have so many good men in the district that they do not know upon whom to confer tiie honor.
Opportunity was taken m the Ala gisirat.es Court yesterday to fare weil .nr ii. N. Jones, who is severing his connection v/ilii mo Bar uw mg to his judicial appointment. Air Barton, S.M., said that as that was the last appearance of Air Jones in lhe Court tie wished to thank AJi Jones for the assistance he had
rendered to the Bench, and in ail cases by tiie fair way he had put ins side Jie iiad assisted the Court in arrive at a just conclusion. That was one thing he could say for the members of the Bar here —they without exception rendered every assistance to the Bench. Although they were sorry to Jose him, they were pleased at his appointment, and Air Barton congratulated Air Jones on liis promotion, and wished him every success. Sergeant Siddelis endorsed the Magistrate’s remarks, and slated the relations between the polite and Air Jones had always been oi a cordial character. iUr Jones had always been willing to oblige him, and lie had found the solicitors in Gisborne willing to assist me police. Air J,. Rees regretted the departure ol ms inend from the Bar. Mr Jones had earned the appoint-
ment, and it. was a due and just reward of merit. Air Jones’ lirst ease, ii he remembered rightly, was with himself, and it was rather a coincidence that liis last case should also be with the speaker. Through-
out his career to its honorable liuisl Air Jones had treated the Bar will courtesy and consideration, and Ik
felt sure that with youth and ability iti his favor he would continue to rise. Mr Jones thanked llis Worship, the Bar, and the police for the kind expression of regret at his departure. The regret was to a certain extent mutual. iie loved lii.s
profession, and when one had worked up a practice with a certain amount of success one could not leave it. without a wrench. Whatever he
had achieved or gained in the way of amors or properly, lie owed to t lie icople of Gisborne, and when the ap.ointment was offered him it was minted out that lie might benefit llie whole place, and in that spirit
lie accepted it. it was a great satisfaction to have these expressions of goodwill, for on the goodwill of the people must depend his success. He would at any rate try to justify
heir good opinion of him. To His Vorship and the officers of his Court
and tlie members of the Bar and the Sergeant, lie returned llis sincere thanks for their unusual courtesy to
