THE ENGLISH MAIL
Although tlie mail steamer from San Fraucisco made a record trip and reached Auckland two days ahead of contract time, Gisborne people are still patiently waiting for the delivery of the English mail. Since its arrival in Auckland, steamers have reached Gisborne via South, and it is not clear why an Auckland mail did not come to haad .via the West Coast. There appears to have been a bungle somewhere, which is not altogether accounted for by delayed steamers. Where the blame rests we cannot say, but possibly there may be good explanations. However, in the interests of the public we would suggest that' the Union Company should strain a point to give the people facilities on Saturdays for replying to their English correspondence. The least the Postal Department can do under the circumstances is to have the inward 'Frisco mail sorted immediately on arrival, and the Union Company for their part might delay the Waikare for a couple of hours. And on this special occasion the Postal Department might arrange its staff so that the mail could he,.closed haif-an-bour before the departure of the steamer.
