FATAL ACCIDENT.

ON THE RAILWAY. By, Telegraph—Press 'Association— Nelson, last night. A shocking fatality occurred on the railway at Spring Grove last evening. Mr James Thomas Smith, a Waiti settler, a well-known cricketer and Druid, left the city by the 4.30 train, and got off at Spring Grove to talk to his betrothed. He was too long on the station, and as the train moved off he attempted to jump aboard He fell under the platform, and some of the carriages and brake van went over him, mutilating both his legs. Tho youDg lady fainted with horror. Smith was taken on tho train and carried to Waiti, where two doctors amputated both hisjlegs, but the sufferer died from the shock. He was well known and highly respected.
