Sir William Russell, Leader of the Opposition, was this afternoon the guest ot a large number of Ins constituents, at a complimentary tea held in tbo I’rmceiy l . Theatre, Hastings, to allow their upprecia% tiou of the sorvices ho bus rendered to the colony and tho district as a member of Parliament, as Colonial Secretary, and as Loader of tiie Opposition. About 400 people wore present, and many complimentary references were made to Sir Will. Russell’s Jong pohticul career. Ho was presented with an illuminated address and a largo and very haudsome solid silver epergue, ol which tuero aro three bowls, each otic being removable. Tho design iB appropriate to the colony, and tbo workmanship is first-class in uvery respect. On the chief bowl aro three punels. Oil one of these is a representation ol Government buildings in Wellington. On tho secoud is a design typical of New Zealand scenery, and on the third a scene representing New Zealand farm and station life. All tho chasing and embossing has reference to the colony. It euutams imitations of Maori carving and of the most notable and beautiful tluwurs and foliage, including tho uke ako and tho uativo clematis. Tho total weight of the epergue is 40U ounces. The total length of tho base is 42 inches, and the total height of ’ the middle stand is 3b inches. Sir Wiiltum Russell retured thunks in a brief hut happy speech.
