As many persons from all the colonies have visited this historic aud lovely island, the sale will no doubt croate wide interest. From native ownership tho island passed to a Scotch company, who worked the copper initio for some years, but ceased on tho breaking out of the Australian gold diggings, and possibly the company having worked out, as they thought, the richer ore usually found above, were not prepared, with more costly and scarce labor, to operate on the lower grade, but much more lasting, ores below. The attempt to unwater the mine by pumping, made throe yoars ago, was only to allow of expert examination, and was only partially successful, on account of the breaking down of the boiler. Kawau is stated to contain maganese, sulphur, iron ore, limestone, cement stone, aud the finest terra-cotta clay for tiling pottery, etc. Coal has also been seen iu more than one spot, no effort has been made to work it.
