GISBORNE DANCES.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.) ' Sir,- During my visit to Gisborne I Wave been favored with tho privilege of boinc present at a few of Gisborne s fashionablo dances recently held, and on each occasion I have been particularly struck with the conspicuous lack o deportmont displayed by tho majority of the dancors. Dancing should bo cultivated as an elegant amusemont conducive to refinement in tho intercourse of society, and it should bo remembered by all young learners of tho art tho principle thing to bo acquired is gracefulnoss of posturo and perfect oaso of carriage. I noticed in the Lancors (which are considered most stately figures when performed with precision) the centlcmon in their enthusiasm became intensely rough, and instead of adhering to the established rules of tho dance and keeping correct time, they rushed the floor and reducod tho dance to an absurdity by presenting a spectacle like that of a scrimmage in a football field, It grieved me to see several young ladies who, though tastefully and clegautly attirtd, walked round tho room displaying considerable lack of culture and deportment by their painfully awkward carriage, their shoulders rounded and heads bent in advance of their bodies, which swayed in tho manner of those of ducks. Surely mothers should attend to this most essential branch of their daughters’ education which is decidedly incomplete without it.—l am, etc., Katti Lannkr.
