PRISONER’S ESCAPE.

A young man named Henry James Howard, aged 19, escaped from the police gaol this morning. A gaoler had given him breakfast and bolted his ceil door, but did not lock it, and left an outer door unbolted. Howard put his arm through the observation hole in the cell door aod shot back the bolt. He got into the gaol yard, climbed over a 12ft iron fence, topped with barbed wire, and escaped. He has not yet been recaptured. Howard waß under ar rest for committing grievous bodily harm on Michael Cuughlau at Brook Valley last evening. He had threatened assault on Cougblan’s daughter. Coughlan accosted him, when he attempted to brain Cough)an with an axe. In raising his arm to defend his head Coughlan’s arm was broken. Howard was formerly concerned in a juvenile bushrangers’ camp et Maungatapu some months ago, where large quantities of stolen goods were found.
