FORGERY AND RUFFIANISM
Per Press Association^, AUOKLAND, last night.
In the Supreme Court, Chas. Miller committed from New Plymouth on a charge of forging the name of one Kua, of Rahotu, t.o an order for £1 was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. John Baxter, for assaulting Mary Clare, and breaking her jaw, was sentenced to two years, and for common assault on Janet O’Mara to one year, the sentences to be cumulative. FIRE AT WAITERAURI.
WAIIII, yesterday
A lire at Waitekauri last night completely destroyed three shops, of Frith, stationer, Phillips, draper, and an empty shop. The efforts of the lire brigade were ineffective, owing to defective hose. PALMERSTON NEWS. PALMERSTON N., last night. The Licensing Committee to-day adjourned applications for renewals of tlie licenses of lhe Central, Railway, and Clarendon Hotels, in which unfavorable reports had been received from the police, for three months. The hotels will he open in Llie meantime.
Isidore M. Cohen, alias 'l'. AT. Cantor, has been committed 'at the Supreme Court, Wellington, for sentence on a charge of obtaining money and goods by false pretences. Several other similar charges, representing goods and cash of the aggregate value of eighty pounds, are pending against the accused.
