Speaking in Christchurch recently, Mr T. E. Taylor expressed himself opposed to corporal punishment under any circumstances. He would sooner sec permanent banishment of the degenerate class from civilisation. If a man had no moral sense, it was clearly impossible to rouse it by inflicting pain on his body. With regard to the suggestion of sterilisation, lie believed that it would receive a certain amount of support from the House, but it. was a tremendous proposition. For his own part, be would support the suggestion that a court should be empowered to inflict such a sentence, though the right, would have to he safeguarded by so great a number of precautions that its infliction would be almost as difficult as capital sentence. He would support the banishment of the classes mentioned fro i society ;he would cut, them off like so many lepers, so that they could never come back. Beyond that, all he could say was that he would consider very careiully any. proposition lor passing a more severe penalty, hut he did not think the time for passing it had come 1 For Bronchial Cough, take W'oods’ Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d and 2s 6d everywhere.
