In tho llouso Mr Korwau moved that the Govornuaont should urge tho Imperial Government to secure by oxeburigo of territory or other peaceful means control of tho whole of New Guinea. He believed that it might be arranged for both Germany and Holland or either to surrender thoir territory fur satistactory compensation. Ho had no doubt, whatever, that this vust territory could be better dovoloped under tho British than foreign rulo, but ho had no suggestion to make as to what territory should be exchanged. Sir E Barton hoped tho motion would not be pressed. Confidential correspondence had recently passed with tho Imperial Government, and it that could bo disclosed it would snow that Australian interests bad been carefully couservod. He regrottod that tho Imperial Ministers of the time had not roahsud the importance of Australian demand for tho complete anexar.iou of New Cuioeu. _ On tho strength of this explanation Mr Korwau withdrew his motion.
