SUGAR BOUNTIES,

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyiigh

Received 12.29 a.m., June 12. Melbourne, Juno 11

In the Senate Mr Higgs gave notice of motion, criticising tho action of the Victorian Governor in delivering an address in favor of an increased Australian naval subsidy as an unwarrautaule interference. In tho House Sir George Turner tnovod tho second reading of the Sugar Bounties Bill. Ho explained that it was simply to provide for charging a rebate on white grown sugar to all States on a population basis, instead of according to the consumption of each State. Tie mentioned that tho total sugar revenue of the commonwealth was £787,000, whereas 1000 tons of Australian produced £274,000, and 85,500 tousot imported produced £513,000. All hoped that the proportion of Australian sugar would increase, though it meant a loss of revenue to the States. But for financial necessities tho States had been in need of an excise duty, and the necessity might disappear by 1906, when the bounties ceased. The dobato was adjourned.
