MAHUTA’S ALLEGIANCE

Referring to his visit to Kawhia the Premier states that the town has kept back owing to the surrounding Native lands not having been dealt with. Ndw that the Maori difficulty has been reI moved be expects a large area will shortly be opened up for settlement. The timo will come too when steamers from Nsw Plymouth will call at Kawhia, and there will be a connection qy triin with Otorohanga, the distance being twenty-fivo miles, then by the main trunk to Auckland. The Premier says that outside of the Auckland provincial district people do I not appear to realise what Mahuta’s joining the Government to settle the Native questions means. Of about five million acres of Native lands, the people over whom Mahuta held sway own more than a fourth, and objection to passing it through the Maori Councils has now been swept away.
