MAHUTA’S SPEECH.
Per Press 'Association Auckland, Inst night,
A meeting suggested by the Premier between the Ngatimaniopoto and Waikato and adjacent tribes took place on Saturday. It was urged by Mr Carroll and Mahuta that the first thing to be done now was to get the land into the hands of tko Maori Councils for settlement. It was further urged that technical schools should bo provided to teach the Natives trades ; that full enquiry be made as to how best to provide for those Natives who are now landless, whoso lauds were confiscated during the troubles of the past. It was especially contended that a central hospital be established for Maoris and that Maori doctors be trained, the principal cost of such hospital to be maintained by well-to-do Maoris. Mahuta made a very manly speech. He declared hat he was satisfied as to the general purposes of the Government, and he called upon his people to support him in the position which he now occupied. lie asked his people to give tangible effect in every possible way to the proposals of the Government by bringing their land under the Councils and conforming to the law in all respects. Various tribes, represented by several speakers, expressed themselves in entire agreement with everything that had taken place, stating that the difficulties wero removed, the prejudices buried, and the animosities relegated to oblivion.
