By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. 8011, the smallpox patient, is still improving, and other occupants of the quarantine station are well and contented.
The proposal to bring the Gracchus to the wharf to take on hoard her cargo from Lyttelton was received with great indignation in the borough. Dr Valentine, acting Chief Health Officer, said there would he absolutely no danger with the precautions to be observed. It has new beer, decided that tiie cargo be taken off to the vessel by lighters, and the ship not be brought alongside the wharf at present. The Canterbury Industrial Association this evening passed a motion to the effect that, seeing the Arbitration Court has the power to grant preference to unionists, and bus done so in cases where a fair proportion of the men affected arc members of tiie union, the Association thinks an unavoidable law giving preference to unionists may he detrimental to a number of men, and may he injurious to the industries of the colonv.
At a meeting of tbe management committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association it was reported that the Governor had accepted tbe position of patron. A letter was read from the Wellington Hockey Association, asking that the North v. South Island match should be played in Christchurch. It was decided to accede to the request of the Wellington Associa tion, and that the match be played at Lancaster Park on June 18th. The Wellington and Canterbury Associations were a-ked to appoint solictors for teams, and all detail arrangements were left to a subcommittee. Tiie secretary reported mat ho was in communication with the Auckland Clubs with a view to the formation of an Association in that district,
