WOMAN A VICTIM THROUGH WASHING CLOTHES,

The victim is Mrs Dwan, who resides at Little Bendigo. Her husband returned by the Uraceluis. The woman is supposed to have contracted the disease through .washing her husband’s clothes.
THE NE"‘ ZEALAND CASE,
(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Bell, Uie smallpox patient, continues to make rapid progress. Ju consequence of various difficulties in the way of dealing with the cargo of the Gracchus in the manner originally suggested, it lias been disinfected, landed at the end of Gladstone pier, and stored there in the open, Further action in regard to it will depend on whether or not there is any, outbreak of smallpox imminent.
Stevedores handled Ihe cargo of the Gracchus at tile ports at which she touched, Melbourne, Port Chalmers, and Timaru. The cargo was not worked by, the steamer’s crew, hut exclusively by lumpers at all these places.
Dr, Valentine has decided that after the Gracchus has been thoroughly disinfected, she may be brought alongside the wharf by a scratch crew and take in cargo to be shipped at this port, When this lias been done, she is to return lo the quarantine ground, where those members of her company .who are certified as healthy may, return to the vessel, which will then he at liberty to proceed Lo her destination, Durban.
