HARBOR ENGINEER.

DECIDED TO OBTAIN OVERSEER,

A special meeting of the Harbor Board was hold yesterday to consider the question of tho appointment of an Engineer. Present: Messrs Townley (Chairman), Harding, Sievwright, Matthewson, Whinray, Clark and Captain Tuckor. Tho Chairman, referring to an article in

tho Times, said that that meeting was a special one to consider the appointment of an engineer. There had been mention of a committee of the whole Board, so that othor subjects mentioned by Mr Harding could be considered, but nothing to that effect was decided, and it had been thought boat to have a special moeting of tho Board to decide the one question. They could go into committoe afterwards if they desired. Complaint had been made about going into committee. Mr Harding said there was no need to go into committeo. Mr Sievwright moved that an Engineer bo advertised for at a salary of £4OO per annum. Tho Chairman: Anything about defining duties ? Mr Sievwright: They can be defined afterwards.

Mr Clark askod if Mr Sievwright meant a qualified marine engineer. Mr Sievwright altered his motion, adding tho prefix “ marine ” to engineer. Mr Clark askod if they had plans' and specifications for the groyne ? Tho Chairman : Yes.

The Secretary said the Board had not plans for the extension of the groyne. Tho Chairman said they had called tenders for tho timber,

Mr Matthewson: The plans were be iore us.

The motion was not seconded. Mr Matthewson moved, and Mr Harding seconded, that applications be called for the position of working overseer to carry out the work now in hand, at a salary of £2OO. Continued on page 4.
