SURPLUS OF £308,905,

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The public accounts for tho year to tho end of Mtfrch 81st appear in detail in tonight’s Gazette, and as was announced by tho Premier in the courso of a speech in Welliugtuii on tho ‘2nd inst., disclose a surplus of £303,905. Tho leading now points of tho accounts now disclosed are that the receipts of consolidated fund for Stic year amounted to £6,717,924. Tho permanent appropriations amounted to T1,579,‘H‘ j . and the annual appropriations to Ti 1,654,099. Tho appropriation for interest and sinking fund was £1,900,978, an iucreaso of £97,0118. Special acts of lcislutiou called for another increase of £74,495. The leading Departmental appropriations were : Education, £526,820; lunacy and charitable aid, £i-4,i08 , railways, £4,654.150 : defence, £217,104 ; polico, £126,698 ; lands, £129,44-. , Postmaster-General, £485,860 ; Justice, £166,922. The annual appropriations for tho i'ublic Works Department amounted to £1,424,484, and there is a balance of £668,565. The balance on the Lands for Settlement account is £668,07-1, tho amount paid for tho purchase of estates having been £668,984.
