DR. NELIGAN’S MASTERLY

ORATION

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. Dr Neligan, Bishop elect of Auckland, was consecrated at St. Mary's Cathedral to-day before an immense congregation. The Bishops of Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson and Waiapu took part, besides a large procession of clergy and officials. Lord Ranfurly attended, and the congregation included Nonconformist representatives of the Ministers’ Association, Presbyterians, and Wcsleyans. Admission was , by ticket. Thousands were refused for want of space. Bishop Julius preached, -a Bishop Neiigau was solemnly enthroned ■ at a service in the Cathedral this evening. There was' a crowded attendance, all the visiting bishops being present. After documents certifying to toe consecration were read the Bishop was handed to his throne by Archdeacon Calder, and declarations of “allegiance were made by representatives of the clergy and laity. The new bishop gave a powerful and brilliant aldre-ss on the words “Mv People.” Without any notes whatever, he delivered one of the most striking and masterly pulpit orations ever heard in Auckland, holding the closest attention of his hearers for nearly an hour. The bishop baa created a very deep and favorable im< preesion.
