(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night

The trial of William Richardson, on a charge of defamatory libel, was concluded to-night, after occupying seven days. Neither counsel for prosecution nor Richardson addressed 'the jury.

Mr Justice Conolly summed up in a speech lasting nearly three hours. He commented on the accused’s method of conducting the case. He reviewed the evidence, and said that if tile jury found the publication was libel, and was not a matter of public interest, accused must be convicted ; but if the jury found it was a matter of public interest, and that the statements did not exceed fair comment, there must he an acquittal The jury, ailer two and a-ltall hours:’ retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty.The verdict was received with applause in the Court, and after Richardson left the Court there was a demonstration pi his favor.It is probable there will be an appeal against the verdict on several law points.
