MASTERTON NEWS.

FARMERS’ UNION AND POLITICS

By Telegraph—Press Association — Mastcrlon, lasi night. Mr T. Li. Lett, a member of the local brunch of ilia Farm‘Vs’ Union, at yesterday’s meeting resigned on Ihe ground that when he joined he did so on the understanding that the organisation was not political. Tito BrcsiUonl, Mr Oockburn, had said that it was absurd to talk of banishing politics from their meetin„. Al. legislation appertaining to or affecting tho interests of land owners must conic into the life ol' the Union, ft was otter nonsense to talk of it being kept out. Further, he desired it distinctly understood that'ho would decline tu represent the Board at the conference if he were not allowed to discuss legislation in the country. Tho meeting decided that Mr Cockburn had to be entirely free to act according to his judgment. The iUasterton Racing Club has decided to hold the next meeting on October 29th and 30th this year, and tho following meeting on April 7th and Bth, 1904. _ At a meeting of the local branch of tho Farmers’ Union yesterday, Mr W. Falkoncr asked members to form themselves into provisional directors with the object of starting a woollen manufactory in Masterton. The matter will be fully discussed at next meeting.

The football match, Masterton v. Carterton, resulted in a win tor tho former by 5 points to nil.
