The residence of Mr W. D. S. Macdonald, To liapara, has been added to the telephone exchange, No. 112. Captain Edwin wired yesterday as follows : “ Gale from between north-east and north and west, glass fall, poor tides, much rain.”
A meeting of the Catholic Church Committee of Gisborne and district will be held in St. Mary’s Presbytery this evening, at 7.30.
The fact that a man of the age of Melba’s father is taking a turn as enginedriver shows that the Victorian Govern, ment has a harder fight than the cables make out.
Mr T. G. Lawless, land and commission agent, has shifted to more commodious offices, situated between the Clothing Factory and Mr D. M. Orr’s establishment.
Blr W. D. S. Macdonald had his trap smashed up in the Mungatawa bush through his horse bolting and running into a hank. Fortunately, the driver escaped injury. Tho Victorian strike is causing highclass papers to lose their balance. The Loudon Times writes of a state of siege, etc. Tho only point in dispute is that the Unions should sever from the Trades Hall.
Professor George Darwin, in the course of an address at the Royal Institute, said the days were ealeulably lengthening, and the time would come when the day would be equal to two present days, the earth rotating eight times monthly. “New Chum,” who was in town yesterday, reports that owing to excessive iiooods at the Blotu, Messrs W. J. P. Gaudin and E. Chrisp, of Gisborne, are weatherbound at that place; so that friends of these gentlemen need have no fear. While in town yesterday, Mr Hiekford, of the Motu, received cash and promises from two gentlemen amounting to T 9, on behalf of the Motu telephone lino. Ho expects to receive further contributions from To Karaka to-day. Messrs Dalgcty and Co., the local agents of Messrs Thos. Borthwick and Sons, of London, have received intimation that the quality of sheep shipped from the Gisbomo Sbecpfarmors’ Frozen Meat Company this season has been of excellent quality. Mr W. Morgan, Chairman of the High School Board of Governors, has received the following telegram from Mr Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools “ £IOOO approved in respect of Board’s application of October last for grant to cover half cost of erecting and equipping technical school at Gisborne, the building to be in accordance with sketch plan forwarded last month.”
Mr W. F. Sinclair yesterday put on three teams to cope with the Coastal traffic. The following were passengers : For Tolago Bay : Messrs Godfrey and Gardiner, Mr and Mrs Tuterangi ; Waiparo : Bliss Staadish ; Waipirc : Mr Ilusset ; Tuparoa : Messrs Fowler .'Government auditor), Kemp, Hill, Charles Dunne, Mrs Keefer, Bliss Hayes, and Blr and Blrs Bloeke.
At the enquiry into the burning of the schooner Brothers, the Court found that the primary cause was the leakage of benzoline stowed under the cabin floor, the liquid having been put there while loading in the afternoon on that day, with the consequence that the ship was burned. As to the consequent vaporisation which ensued, whereby the explosion took place, and whether the explosion was wilful or accidental, there was no evidence to show.
