MR J. MILLS INTERVIEWED.
iPer Press Association^ Wellington, last night,
Interviewed, Mr J. Mills, managing director of the Union Company, said the full effect of the Federal tariff had not yet been felt, owiug to the drought calling for extraordinary supplies from Now Zealand. In a normal condition of things, he does not anticipate there will be much of a market iu Australia for New Zealand produce. As to Fiji, he thought that island draws most of her merchandise from the Commonwealth, but New Zealand was quite as large a market for Fiji fruit as Australia. Speaking of the Vancouver service, he said there was always a full cargo from Canada, chiefly manufactured goods, machinery, paper, flour, and sal(non, and there is some hope before long that cargoes will be found for the run back.. Mr Mills also speaks hopefully of the Indian trade, for which the steamer Aparima was built specially. He believes that frith improved and regular facilities for shipment the horse trade with India can be largely developed by breeders producing a class of animals suitable for that country. _____________
