LIABILITY FOR INCOME TAX,

The House of Lords upheld the Scottish Court of Session’s decision that the Scottish Provident Association ought to be assessed for income tax on 11217,350 remitted from Australia in 1898. Tho Association maintained that the amount consisted of repaid loans, not profit. Lord Ilalsbury held that the mere cabling of these sums of capital did not make them so. In his opinion they were rightly assessed for income.
