MAORI COUNCIL.

(To the Editor ol the Times.) Sir,—Kindly aliow me to say a word or two in comment on Mr Tuta Nihoniho’s letter. This gentleman objects to the policy of the Farmers’ Union, and the endeavor of that body to have the Maori lands brought into the market. I maintain, Mr Editor, that it is unreasonable and absurd for anyone to object to what is so manifestly conducive to the progress and welfare of the district. Hundreds of

thousands of European immigrants are pouring into the United States, Canada, aud even South America. The Governments of these countries are doing all

they can to assist the new settlers and give them access to the land. Great tracts are being brought under cultivation, and thriving and populous cities are springing up as if by magic. New Zealand cannot afford to be left entirely behind in the matter of development! The Farmers’ Union has most moderately drawn attention to a crying need of the present day. By far the most sensible solution of the question is to have freetrade in Maori lands, subject of course to judicious safeguards. I would respectfully suggest, Mr Editor, that a meetiug be called, and that without delay, so that a resolution may be proposed urging the Government to give free-trade in this matter. Ic is of vital importance and interest to the inhabitants of Gisborne and district that this alteration of the laws should be made, as the district in general, and this town in particular, would be greatly benefitted thereby.—l am, etc., J. G. Cox.
