A SHOW OF PICTURES.
I It he line collection of pictures now be* ing exhioited by Mr J. .Douglass Perrett at- Messrs Wyilie and Mason’s auction are about sixty in all. Nearly all of them are Mr Perfect's own work, and landscapes chiefly of mountain, lake, and river scenery! Inc idi.se lecture that strikes one on ontering is tho beautiful softness of the majority of the pictures, and the delicate | atmospheric effects obtained. Both characters are due to the nature of the
I work, these being pastel or colored picuncs. Mr Perrett has obtained notable success with this material, and with pas- | tens surpasses himself in oils. The largest picture is No. 11, “ Clinton River,” which is a beautiful transcript of one of New Zealand's prettiest rivers. The companion picture is that of Wanganui River,” which has a beautiful warm effect,
tne colors being rich and harmonious, and is indeed very characteristic of the charming scenery of that river. Among the oils is a oeaulifui picture of Harrison Cove, Milford Sound, of which the several components—lake ranges, and sky are well done, and make” up a scene at once charmingly and artistically depicted by an artist‘whose color j
conceptions are of the highest order. Among the manv subjects is that of one nearer home, “ Waikaremoana.” This subject is quiet different to Southern lake scenery. The rocky bluffs, capped with rich foiiage, reflecting on the trauquil water, presents a very peaceful effect. Mr Perrett’s pastel work is very charming. His water surfaces is full of reflective power ; his atmospheres are soft and give a real effect of distance, and the result even with the richest coloring is a “ restful ” picture, and that is a most desirable character in a living room adornment. The collection will be sold at auction tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock in Messrs Wyilie and Mason’s auction mart, and we would advise our readers that this opportunity should be taken to purchase some magnificent paintings which will be sold at auction price with a few exceptions.
