THE FARMERS’ TROUBLES.

The first prosecution in the Western District for failing to comply with the Noxious Weeds Act was taken to-day against Andrew Bliekie, who has been 24 years farming at Spurbtish. In his evidence lie said that he had been troubled with Canadian thistle for IT years, the land being subject to flood and seeds coming from up the river. He had bought a mower long before the Act spoken of, and employed other means to keep the pest in check. This year he had cut over 300 acres, and considered that he had done all in his power to check the spread. There was a Government reserve cf 500 acres near him, from which the seed came like a snowstorm, and nothing was done to destroy the weed on it. The Inspector admitted that the sum appropriated by the Government for the purpose had been exhausted, and the work was not competed. The Magistrate reserved his decision, I
