A notification in regard to the Borough election and Mayoralty appears in this issue.

The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union will be held on Monday evening next.

Nominations for the election of one member to represent the Patutahi riding oh the Cook County Council will be received up to noon on the 20th inst.

Fitzgerald’s circus and menagerie wiil open at, Gisborne on Monday next. Mr Fred. 0. Parker is at present in town completing arrangements for the exhibition. Several of the Coastal schools are dosed on account of an epidemic of measles. Awanui, Tuparoa, Waipiro and Tokomaru are included in the number. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr and Mrs George Watkins, of Tolago Bay, whose sou Percy, aged 4 years, died at the Hospital, after a fingering illness, on .Sunday evening. Instructed by Mr W. Eose, of Dunedin, Messrs Wyllie and Mason will on Saturday next offer by auction a splendid assortment of Australasian and European furs. Ladies furs in the most fashionable shapes are included in the consignment. Gisborne enjoyed splendid weather for the holidays, and the va'ious excursions were well patronised- The busses to Wainui beach yesterday had a busy time in conveying picnickers to and from tiie beach. The final in the Gisborne Bowling Club’s championship singles: competition was played on Saturday, when Ponsford beat Massey in the concluding game of the three which it was agreed should be played. The Crown lands ballot on Saturday morning had to be postponed from 11 orclock until (he afternoon, on account of ;1 registered packet of letters and applications from Napier not coming to hand. The packet was subsequently recovered. There were about live hundred persons, chiefly ladies and children, at the Recreation Ground on Sunday afternoon, when the Gisborne Rifles Band, under (he conductorship of Mr McKiliop, gave an excellent sacred concert, which was greatly appreciated by the large number present. There were large congregations at each of the churches for the Easter

services. Holy Trinity Church ami St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church were very tastefully decorated. The services were most impressive. ; Wesley Church on Sunday evening was • rowded to its utmost capacity. A feature of the musical portion of the service was the singing of Miss Alice Ri miner. In another column Mr R. Cogar notifies that ho has started business in Gisborne as an accountant and general agent, his office being portion of that occupied by Mr M. G. Nasmith, in the Albion Buildings. Mr Cogar, who has had upwards of *2O years’ experience in the chief colonial centres, is prepared to undertake the keeping of tradesmen's books, preparation of balance-sheets, or auditing of accounts.

There was a large attendance at the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s social last evening in the Academy of Music, which was tendered to the visiting oarsmen. The floor was in good order. Mr J. Harvey acted as M.C. The music was supplied by Mrs Hernandez, and was much enjoyed by all. A strong ladies' committee, comprising of Misses McGrath (2), Morrell (2), Tills, Sheets, File, and Green, are deserving of high praise for their untiring efforts to promote the pleasure of those present. A sumptuous supper was provided, and all the good things were done full justice to. During the evening Mr R. Johnston presented the prizes won by members of the club durmg the present jeason.

On Saturday, the Assistant Chief Veterinarian, Mr C. J. Reakes, visited the site of the proposed abattoirs, and expressed himself well satisfied with it. Mr Reakes was accompanied by Mr R. D. B. Robinsjn, Town Clerk. There was a large attendance at the anniversary concert given in the Wesley Church last night. Tii e singing of Miss Alice Rimmer was very much appreciated, and it is safe to say that that lady will receive a very heart y reception on any future visit to Gisborne. Others who gave valuable assistance at the concert last night were Misses Golding and Williams, Mrs Vincent, Messrs East, I'iesse (2), and Wilkinson.
