ROWING.
There was a large crowd of spectators in the vicinity of the Rowing sheds and the Whataupoko bridge on Saturday afternoon to witness the race between the representatives of the Napier and Gisborne Rowing Clubs, Tho juniors were the first to row, and were somewhat under a disadvantage on account of having to row against the tide. The senior race was rowed immediately after the junior, when the title had turned, Mr A. Robinson acted as starter and Mr G. B. Oman officiated as judge.. GISBORNE JUNIORS v. NAPIER JUNIORS. GISBORNE (yellow amf nlack) : H. Bright (str), J. S. Wauchop (3), G. Nolan (2), B. DeLautour (bow), Faram (cox). NAPIER (black and white) :A. Palairet (str;, Mitchell (3), McGill (2), Nicholson (bow), E. O.Neill (cox). r-The Gisborne men got away badly and lost lully a length and a-half before they were well under way. The Napier crew increased their leadj and although Bright made a good attempt to reduce the gap and succeeded in doing so, the blacks were never headed. Towards the finish, Palairet rallied his men and rowed a brilliant finish, passing the winning post with a length and a-nall to advantage.
NAPIER SENIORS, ■'the .junior race over, the senior crews left lor the post, tne Napier men being warm favorites. The race was over a two-mile course. .The crews were as under GISBORNE Yellow aod black) : L. F. Williams (sir), O. Hansen (3) Dr." Fisher (3) Id. Symes (bow), Faram (COX). NAPIER (black and wnite) : R. Heath (str), N, Heath (3), Taylor (3), Bone (1>oto), U. O.Neill (cox). From a good start, Napier forged ahead and were never caught, securing an easy win, The Heath brothers gave a good exhibition of rowing, whilst Taylor and Bone both did good work. POVERTY BAY v. UNION JUNIORS."
Yesterday morning, there was a large attendance of past and present oarsmen to witness the tepresentative race between the above crews. Exceptionally keen interest was taken in the contest on accou.it of the fact that the local crew is one of the best that lias ever represented the Povert y Bay Club in the junior competition, Mr W. Fraser acted as starter. The race was over a mile and a distance, and was the best representative race of the season. The crews were
POVERTY BAY (blue aod white): J. Smith, str., lOst ; A. Fool, Mo. 3,10.8 ; A. Pritchard, 3, 10.0 ; A. : W. Kirk, bow, 9.0 ; W. Luttreil, cox. ...UNION (red and white) : J Dickson, str., 9.13 ; Nicholson, 3, 10.1 ; •J. Locan, 3, 9.9 ; H. Holder, bow, 9.3 ; E. O’Neill, cox. From a good start the. pace was made pretty lively, the crews rowing abreast for the first half-mile. The trues then quickened the pace, and on .reaching the footbridge had gained half a length. The Union spurted, and reduced the lead, but Poverty Bay again drew away. As the boats rounded the bend, the spectators were treated to ab exciting race. The Union men were coming along in capital seyle, and on arrival at Barton’s were well up to their opponents. A great struggle ensued, both ciews putting in every ounce, but the Poverty Bay crew finally forged to the. front, ‘and won in capital style by half a le»gth. , On Sunday the visiting ciews were taken for a drive in the country, by the local clubs.
