The ratepayers of tho Lower Ilutt rojectod by a largo majority a proposal to borrow £3500 for tho purchaso of a pro; perty for a recreation ground. Roefton, last night. Dean Rollaud, who was a prominent figure in tho Maori war, has boon in failing health, and yestorday underwent a diffieuit surgical operation. Wanganui, last night. A public mooting to-day formed an influential committee, and dccidod to invite subscriptions in connection with tho Rolieston national momoriul. Aftor a discussion extending ovor a considorablo period tbe Hospital Board to-day came to a decision on tho question of a nurses’ homo. As funds would not permit of an up-to-dato homo detached from the hospital being erected, it was decided to make additions to tho building at present used as an infectious diseases hospital, and also a dining-room attached to tho hospital. Tho cost will bo about £SOO.
