WAIROA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The river entraneo has been fairly good for a week, during which timo the TaDgaroa made three trips, thereby relieving the congested stato of the trallic. But a souther now keops guard at the mouth of the river while the steamer lies idle at our wharf. Our School Committee aro keeping a list of the pupils who are failing to make the required attendances with a view to prosecuting the parents. It appears that nothing short of such harsh measures has any effect with some. Free education has just a tendency towards a depreciation of its worth. The 'Maori Land Court still holds out, and a number of Natives are still camped about tho town. Mrs M. Winter's private residence is approaching completion and will bo a credit to Queen Street. At a meeting of the Demonstration Committee (Mr Neill in the chair) it was decided to spend tho balance of the fund in fencing in tho rotunda in octagonal form. Mr Corkill has been asked to have a low picket-fence put round it at an early date.
Everything is languishing for want o rain.
Our Dairy Directors have again lapsed
into a quiescent state, as we hoar nothing of their doings. As there are moro than one Richmond in tho field it is to be hoped that they will arrange with someono to havo tho factory ready for September. Tempus fugit 1
