AUCKLAND WANTS A RAILWAY, FOUNDRY,

The Trades and Labor Council resolved to approach the Minister of Railways and ask him to establish an iron foundry at Newmarket workshops, and to point out that .since the Council’s previous communication a foundry has been established at Hillside, Dunedin, Auckland not being fairly Ireated in this matter. WAITEMATA LICENSING POLL. The latest returns for Waitemata indicate the probable return of three moderates. Franklin, so far, indicates the return of four moderates, ELECTORAL ENQUIRY. At the King enquiry, evidence is being given with the object of combating King's statement that the names oi several of those complaining were transferred on applications signed by, themselves. PAHIATUA LICENSING POLL. WOODVILLE, J u st night. The licensing election for Pahiatua resulted in four nominees of the prohibition party coining out on top by substantial majorities. For fifth place, Messrs O’Meara and Dolton have eleven votes between them, with two small returns to come in, which may a fleet their positions. DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT. Mrs Somerville, wife of one of the best known and oldest, residents of Woodville, died yesterday, after a lingering illness. The deceased lady, was highly respected throughout the whole of the flush district. WANGANUI LICENSING POLL. 'Hie election is proceeding quietly, though the moderates and prohibitionists are working hard. The former have engaged all the cabs in town, but the latter are well -supplied with private vehicles. Both parties are pledged to 10 o’clock, but ine moderates state their intention, if elected, to grant packet licenses to river steamers, whereas the Prohibitionists will probably refuse them, THE PREMIER OPENS THE DULLS BRIDGE. MARTON, last night. 'Hie Premier opened 'the Bulls bridge yesterday. There was a large gathering of people. The town was gaily decorated. Heavy rain fell the whole time, and spoilt the celebrations. The bridge is far superior to the old one, which was washed away in 1897 flood, and is longer, the total length being 1570 feet. The cost of construction wad abaut £IO,OOO, Maoris took a leading part in the celebration, and gave Mr .Seddon a splendid welcome. They presented him with mats, and lie was entertained at luncheon. Mr Seddon gave a short address, dealing principally with the naval squadron. He only spent two hours here, having to leave by the mail train. WANGANUI, last night. The Education Board’s annual rev port states two changes under the Act of 1901 may he looked on as improvements, the reduction of pupil teachers', and the appointment of mistresses to small schools where pupil teachers used to lie employed. fit rrranging salaries under the new scheme it was found that thirteen pupil teachers would he unprovided for, and they were taken on as excess teachers in the large schools, and will fill vacancies as they occur, and thus an adjustment was made with out injustice.... When all the teachers come under, the Act next year 97 head teachers will receive less salary under the colonial scale than the Board is now paying. Many of these eases have already been adjusted and the Board will take other cases into consideration when the new appointments are made, but unless there is ;:n abnormal number of vacancies some salaries must be lowered. Dr. McArthur, S.M.? decided that the Minister of Marine went beyond his authority in approving of a clause ’ll ihe Union Company’s articles allowing the Superintendent of Marine ro make deductions from the wages of any seaman of the remedy conferred upon him by statute, and was i iiereforc inoperai ive. NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. Wilfred Yon Stunner was charged in the S.M. Court this morning with the theft of £lO, moneys of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Factory Company, whose agent he was at Eltha in. The solicitor for the Company, in applying for a remand, said that the total involved was about £1270.... A remand for a week was granted, bail being allowed in two sureties ot £250 each;
