Twenty-five thousand people witnessed the final for the Sydney £IOOO Handicap. Shortly after the start the eleven competitors separated into two bunches, the limit men pacing in turns made the pace a cracker. Opposite the members’ stand Hopper, leaving the front hunch, shot ahead. Walker went in pursuit, and made great efforts to overtake him, but the rapid American passed the post fifteen yards ahead, Thorne a couple of yards away J third. Forbes was fourth. The time was 1.53 2-5. The Five Mile Scratch Race resulted : Chalmers (New Zealand) I, Megson (New South Wales) 2. It was a good finish. Won by half-a-length. Time, 11.11 2-5. I Major Taylor fell in the Half-Mile I Race, and was slightly injured. Cameron, Victorian, won.
