HONOUR TO THE BRAVE.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)
Bir, It was with much regret rhat I read the verdict of the jury on the inquest of Ivar Hoiby, and to think that Hansen, the man who left his childron on the beach go and save another, was passed over without being highly commended for his brave action in swimming with the boy until Hoiby came to his assistance ; had not Hoiby come Hansen or the boy would have lost his life. I think these matters are treated far too lightly by the jury, for it is not the first time that Hansen has proved himself ready and able to assist in saving life, for he was one of the crew that went out in the surf boat with the late Captain Thompson to save the iatter’s son, and they had to land on the Watkanae beach, as they could not get into the river, the sea being too heavy ; but they were rewarded by saving young Thompson. The jury also treated t6o lightly the other men who assisted to save young Menzies.
Bir, we all know that it is no more than our duty to try and save a fellow-creature from drowning, but I think a word of praise to those who do it is not out of place. I could mention a dozen cases in Gisborne where there have been lives saved, and they have been passed over without even being commended.—l am etc., ’
F. Lowndes.
