TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILWAY
BIG WORK PROPOSED IN AUSTRALIA. TO BE COMPLETED IN FOUR YEARS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received 1.10 a.m., March 14, Sydney, March 18. The report of the Commission appointed by tho Federal Government to inquire into the construction of a transcontinental railway recommend that authority for undertaking the construction should be prepared to expend five millions and ninety thousand pounds. The probable revenue would be two hundred and five thousand pounds per annum. If the past progress of West Australia wore maintained the revenue would probably increase in ten years to four hundred and eleven thousand per annum. The probable expenditure in working the line would be one hundred and fourteen thousand pounds yearly, which in ten years would probably increase to two hundred and ten thousand pounds. The route tentatively recommended iB from Fort Augusta, via Tarcoola. passing fifty miles north of Eucla, thence a 3 direct as possible to Kalgoorlie. The estimates are based on four feet eight and a-half gauge. The time of construction should be four years.
