FIRE BRIGADES DEMONSTRATION.

MOST SUCCESSFUL YET HELD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last night. The fire brigades demonstration was brought to a conclusion this afternoon. In connection with the result of the three men manual, in which the Spit team successfully appealed to have additional penalties imposed on Christchurch, and therefore declared to have first place, the Appeal Committee met again this morning and after taking further evidence, decided that as both teams had been judged on the same conditions they should run-off. Spit again appealed, but the Committee adhered to their decision that the teams mast run again. The run-off resulted as follows : Christchurch, 49 3-ssec, pen. 2 sec, 51 3-ssoc ; Spit, 49 l-ssec, pen. ssec, 54 l-ssec. The five men manual was won by Gore, 42 4-sseu ; Christchurch, 47 3 ssec, second ; Spit, 49sec, third ; Hawera, 48 2-ssec, fourth ; Greymouch and Ashburton each 54sec, tied for fifth place, and agreed to divide the prize money. The coupling event for two men went to the Ashburton team, 42sec ; Christchurch, 43 I-ssec, second ; Hawera, 43 4-ssec, third ; Caversham, 44sec, fourth ; Oamaru, 44sec, fifth. The consolation event, hose, hydrant, and union, five men, was won by Timaru, after a tie with Kuripuni, the time being 34sec each. In the run off Timaru

equalled their previous time, but Kuripuni occupied 36sec. Dannevirke 36 l osec, were third; Hastings, 37sees, fourth ; Ashburton, 37 2-ssec, fifth. The win was very popular, for most of the firemen have pleasant recollections of the hospitality Ehown by the Christohurcti brigade at the previous demonstration, and the three leading teams were undoubtedly tbe pick of those competing. Napier’s position on the list is very creditable, seeing that they did not enter for any of tho manual eDgine events. The manual engine shield was also won by the Christchurch brigade with twelve points, Spit and Gore equal next with five points each, and Ashburton fourth with four points.

Hawera won the high pressure shield with sleyep points, Napier second with seven points, Spit and Thames equal next with five point? each.
