Tenders close at noon on Friday, 20th insl., tor County Council contract 03, road maintenance, Waimata The linal meeting of St. Patrick’s Sports Committee will be held at 8 to-night at the Masonic Hotel. Every committee man is requested to attend.

Nominations for the general committee of the Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association must be in the hands or tne Secretary on or before Saturday. The names of Captain Tucker and Mr C. Cray have been mentioned as gentlemen likely to be asited to stand lor eieetion at the forthcoming licensing election. Messrs Peckover and Co. desire to purchase land in Te Karaka district. They also oiler a number of choice town and suburban properties for sale.

Everything is running smoothly for St. Patrick s annual sports on Thurs day next, and there should be a large attendance. It will be a holiday in town irom noon.

St. Patrick’s Social is always regarded as one of the social events of the year, and the gathering of Thursday evening next is bound to be a great success. The proceeds are in aid of Maori Church funds. The admission is lixed at a small sum, and anyone who wishes t.o contribute is invited to do so.

The County Engineer, Mr Do ti. Fraser, will receive applications from 10 a.in. to noon on Saturday, 21st inst., from persons desirous of carting metal from depots for road repairs during the winter. A great event in Salvation Army circles commences to-morrow and continues until 'i'uesday, being a liarvest festival. lb is to he conducted by Major and Mrs Spargo, and should he a great success.

When the luggage of the Williamson Company was being shipped during the rough weather on Thursday morning, a uox containing wearing apparel was accidentally dropped overboard. Attention is directed to Messrs Eure and Ambridge’s advertisement in regard to the Economic. The new season’s goods have been specially selected for autumn and winter requirements, and there is an extensive stock to choose from. Considerable improvements have been effected in the interior of the Economic premises;, and the show room is most attractive. The enterprising proprietors of the Economic are sparing no efforts to make the firm one of the most popular in town.

At the bowling green yesterday afternoon, a number of interesting games were played, including the following : Championship singles : Wallace beat C. Adair by 27 to 1) ; Dixon beat W. Pettie by 17 to Hi after a keenly contested game. In the handicap singles Orr, 7 points, easily beat Gaudm, scratch, by 30 to 11. In the handicap pairs Seymour and Simson (skip) were too good for Orr and Massey, who were beaten, after a good game, by 21 to 19. Other matches played were : Pettie and Dixon, 19, v. Wallace and Ponsford, S 7 ; O’Meara, Nicholas, Matthewson, and McGowan (skip), 21, v. Morgan, Williams, Ambridge, and Martin (skip), 17 ; Eure and Quigley, 17, v. Robertson and Bright, 21.

Mr T. G. Lawless, the well-known and enterprising land and insurance agent, of Gisborne, has secured the agency of the Guardian Assurance Company, and is prepared to issue fire policies from to-day. The Office is a very old one, having been established in London in 1821. The accumulated funds amount to £5,000,000.

At the Police Court yesterday, befo'6 Messrs Lewis and Bright, Justices, a firs, offender was fined 5s and 2s costs for drunkenness. The civil business comprised one case, judgment by default being given in David Morrison v. A. McKenzie, junr., claim .£l2 12s, costs 18s. The large number of thirty-nine patients were admitted to the Hospital last month, but against that thirty-one were dis charged and three died, leaving twentysix remaining, there having been twenty one in from the previous month. There were seven typhoid patients, all progressing well. An important sale is announced to take place at Takapau, Tolago Bay, on Thursday, April 2.3 d, when the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, in conjunction with Messrs Williams and Kettle, will sell by public auction, under instructions from Mr James Macfarlane, who nas sold his estate, the whole of his live and dead stock, consisting of 22,000 sheep and 1200 head of cattle, and all farm plant and implements. The high standard and quality of the stock should cause keen competition for the various lots to be. offered. Messrs J. W. Bright and A. F. Kennedy will conduct the sale.
