TIDE-SIGNALLING.
A VALUABLE DEVICE,
XPer Press Association^ ‘ WELLINGTON, last night. A patent tide signalling device, invented by Captain Allman and Gluet- ' Knoineci: F. Clennel, of the steamer Maiaroa, was tested to-day before a. gathering of shipping men at the rooms of Ihe Shipmasters Association. The device, which is intended • for harbor bars, stands fifteen feet in height, having a semaphore arm moved automatically by a float attached to a shaft operating the semaphore. The rise or fall of the_ tide reives or lowers the arm. Figures arc painted on an arc denoting the amount ol water on the bar. and the semaphore moving up or down points to the number of feet. These lig-llr>.-s may lie seen two or tluec miles awvy at night. Another apparatus is brought into play by which a light is shown at flood-tide, and as the tide goes down the light is obscured. It was considered that the device would tic of great use in all tidal harbors.
