BUTTER AND CHEESE.
THE KARAMEA’S CARGO.
By Tolegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night.
In tho course of a report dated Januury 16th, Mr H. C. Cameron, Produco Commissioner in England, says : General satisfaction regarding tho Karamea shipment of butter liuh been expressed by tho trade. It, however,' unfortunately met a declining market, and had to bo quitted at lower prices thau were obtained for previous shipments. This season tho markot has beon affected by several weakening factors. Apart from largo quantities of stored butter and a long spell of mild weather experienced until a few days ago, largo supplies of now-mado goods havo continued to come forward from tho Continent and olsowhore, with which New Zealand has had to compote. Tho Karamea shipment of cheese met with an excellent market, lino brands readily making from 60s to 61s per cwt. Supplier, all round aro in comparatively small compass, and thero is evory prospect of prices being fully maintained for somo timo to come. It would appear from tho position of tho market and the prospects for the future that those factories which havo confined thoir operations to chocsornaking will probably show better results at the end of this season than those that while formerly making cheese have this season changed to butter-making. A steady policy one way or the other would seem to be tho best in tho long run. Tho ToDgariro’s shipmonl was delivered in excellent condition generally.
