ENGLISHMEN EASILY DEFEAT SOUTH ISLAND.

By Telegraph—Press Association

Dunedin, last night

Tho match Lord Hawke’s team v. South Island resulted, as expected, in a win for tho visitors by an innings and 130 runs. Tho weather was beautifully fine, with a stiff north-east breeze. The wicket was again in fioo order, and should have been good for a large score. With seven down for 32 Callaway partnered Ongley, but was soon bowled. Boxshall hit out merrily for 15, when he was bowled. Ongley, who had been at the wickets for over an hour for three, was then caught by Bosanquet, and the innings closed for 51. Following on the South Island team made a slightly better stand, the bowling not proving quite so deadly. Reese was the first to retire, bowled by Thompson. Thirty was up for one wicket at luncheon. On resuming Siedebcrg was almost at once caught, and only 5 more were added when Wilson shared the same fate. The partnership of Howden and Boxshall was profitable, the latter putting on 40 in quick style. After being let off in the slips, ho was caught, with the total at 94. Ongley soon fell a victim to Burnup, and one ball was enough for Callaway. Fisher put on 11, but none of the others could stay with Howden, who carried his bat for 37, the innings closing for 133, leaving the Englishmen winners by 130. The scores were : Englishmen, first innings, 314. South Island—lst innings.
