YOUTH BECOMES INSANE.

MUTILATES HIS FINGERS AND ATTACKS IIIS MOTHER.

TRIES TO STRANGLE HER,

Bv Telegraph - Press Association. Invercargill, last night,

This morning a youth of 19, living in the suburbs, suddenly became insane, and hacked off the tips of three fingers. He then attacked his mother, throw her to the floor, and tried to strangle her with his maimed hands. The house is in a sparsely peopled locality, and when Mr Gray, second officer of the s.s. Herald, who was visiting his family while the ship was in port, got on the scene, matters looked ghastly. The youth showed superhuman strength, and it was some time beforo assistance arrived, Mr Gray had a sharp struggle with him. Eventually the police and a doctor arrived. They got the injured hand dressed, and the lad was removed to custody. The mother, though much exhausted, was not injured.
