In the House of Commons an interesting debate took (place on the unemployed question. Mr Fenwick supported Mr Long's contention that lack of employment was exaggerated. Others declared that the solution was not in turning the local authorities into amateur farmers. Mr Hardie’s amendment to enable the authorities to employ unemployed on land and also in industries was ultimately negatived by 201 to 161.
When a dog in Japan disturbs his neighbors by barking at night, its owner is arrested and sentenced to work a year tor the disturbed neighbors. The dog never barks again for he is at once put to death. Since the treaty oi peace between France and Germany was signed in 1871, Germany has not extended her territory a single acre on the Continent of Europe, but°she has increased her population by 16.000,000. About 1,200,000 people arc always afloat on tho seas of the world.
