Morpeth drew within half a length of the leader as the last furlong was entered upon, and the Crackshot gelding’s victory was loudly proclaimed. \ oung Malone was not, however, to be denied, and making one last effort on Hinetapauriki he succeeded in battling out a great finish, and gained the favorable decision of the judge by the shortest of heads. There was great excitement as the horses swept past the judge’s box, and for some time the victory of both horses was loudly acclaimed. Malone deserves great credit for his win, and for the manner in which he so gamely stuck to his task. There were 601 investors on the macnine, and the dividends were £S 5s on Hiuetapauriki and 12s on Morpeth.
