SPEECH BY THE PREMIER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The Premier, in a spooch, said the figures obtained by telegraph from the Treasury showed that for the ten months of the presont financial year fcbo Customs returns exceeded those of the corresponding period of last year by £84,326. Other increases were : Railway £125,587, stamps £36,188, income tax £2176, registration and other fees £9229, marine £727, making a total of £255,233. Under decreases the land tax showed £9862, and beer duty £690. Under territorial there was a falling off in land revenue of £18,315. Miscellaneous shows a falling off of £720, but the net excess for the ten mouths was £228,646. The Government would be able to announce a surplus of at least £250,000 at the end of the financial year, despite the remissions of taxation and railway rates and other concessions, and despite also the increased expenditure. When the Government decided to place a loan of a million and a quarter on the London market it was decided not to accept less than £94 10s per cent, The loan had been underwritten at that amount. The last time he went to the London market the minimum was £94.
