TIDAL WAVE.
AN ISLAND HALF INUNDATED. FIVE HUNDRED LIVES LOST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received 11.29 p.m., Feb. 17th. Sydney, Feb. 18. The American ship Aquor, which has arrived at Newcastle, confirms the news from New Zealand that thore was no disaster at Tahiti or the Society Islands. The ship left Tahiti twenty days ago, fourteen days after the reported disaster. On tho morning of January 26th, tho small steamer Excelsior arrived at Tahiti with some passengers from an island, which the captain of tho Aguor understood to bo in tho Lower Archipelago. These passengers stated that their island had been more than half inundated by a tidal wave, and about 500 peoplo, principally natives, had boon lost.
