It must, of coarse, happen that different works of reference, however distinct their plan and scope, approach in certain pariiculars the same provinces in the world of knowledge, if, that is to say, they are planned as generously as are “ The Times Gazetteer,” “ The Times Atlas, the Ninth Edition of “ The Encyclopaedia Britannica,” and The Century. The position of a town, for example, one of the points whioh is noted in “ The Gazetteer,” can also be discovered by reference to “The Atlas.” But no one would therefore reason that these two valuable sources of knowledge compete with each other—they are obviously complementary. A description of a country, again, whioh is described in “The Gazetteer,” is also to be found m “ The Encyclopedia Britannica,” since it takes the whole of knowledge as its held, and yet it is clear that tha two works serve entirely different ends. WORDS, AND THINGS EOR WHICH THEY STAND. So The Century, although its cyclopedic features are among its mo3t imp ortant merits, does not oompete, and does not propose to compete, even in these features, with “ The Encyclopedia Britannica.” To begin with, The Century contains a complete account of every word in the language.
