The Opportunity a Temporary One.
It almost seems a waste of space to say much about the pecuniary aspects of the advantageous offer made by the Times—about the bargain as distinguished from The Century Dictionary and Cyclopaedia and Atlas itself, when the latter topic suggests so many interesting thoughts, and leads to the consideration of so many striking characteristics of the work: but it is, after all, the bargain that is at once & novelty and a matter of the hour. The Century would be none the less a great book if it were sold for twice the price at which it is now sold, but the price and the system of serial payments, which so greatly facilitate the purchase of the work, are of very immediate interest to the intending purchaser. The sum for which The Century is now sold by tife v Times, inconsiderable as it is in comparison with the publishers’ price, stiff remains an item to be considered in shaping the budget of any one month’s expenditure. The Times, however, enables the purchaser to distribute the amount over a number of months, and by this expedient brings the work within the reach of persons of moderate means.
Educated men must buy such a book sooner or later, and it is a waste of money to wait until the present price has been increased, as it must inevitably be in New Zealand.
