GISBORNE RACING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.
Tho Gisborne Racing Club were favored with glorious weather for the opening day of their summer meeting, which took place at the Park racecourse yesterday. Excellent arrangements had been made for tho gathering, and the attendance was very large, whilst speculation was brisk, tho sum of £3544 being put through the totalisator, us against £2352 for tho previous year. The course was in splendid order, and reflected great credit upon the caretaker, Mr J. Thompson, who worked hard throughout the day. A word of praise is due to Mr Nasmith, the club’s popular secretary, for the success of the day’s outing, and notwithstanding that there were several enquiries by tho stewards during the day, the races were kept well up to time. The Gisborne Rifles Band was in attendance during the afternoon, and played a number of choice selec- I tious, which tended to enliven the proceedings. An excellent lunch was provided by Mr James Craig, and was largely patronised. The train arrangements were most complete, and during the day 390 passengers were booked to the races.
The starting, which as a rule is very good at the local meetings, was yestorday anything but satisfactory. In almost every race there were several breaks away, and when the horses were sent on their journey the hold was generally in strug gling order, with two or three of tho competitors two or three lengths behind. In
tho hurdle race, with only four starters, there were no less than five breaks-away, and when the quartette was sont off Hippowai was left some lengths behind. We really do not see what difference a length makes in a hurdle race, and with a small field of three or four it is ridiculous to behold several false starts, as waß the case yosterday.
The dividends yesterday wore small, and this was no doubt a good thing for tho machine, and helped to swell the returns. Tho popular host of the Masonic Hotel put up a record in the first three races,
tho huia colors being to tho front upon each occasion. Mr Harding was nearly scoring a fourth win in tho concluding raco of the day, but tho unexpected.happened, and Hinetapaurika for tho second timo proved too good for Soultina. It was a fino race, and tho favorite was beaten by loss than half a length. Mr W. Duncan’s Taniwha won the Hack Flat Handicap in good stylo, and Mrs M. 0. Rhode’s A.B.N, and Borax proved too gcod for their opponents in the Summer and Welter Handicaps. A.B.N. ran a fine raco, and won Jiko a thorough tradesman. Borax’s victory was somewhat of a surprise, and the lucky investors were rewarded with the substantial dividend of £7 Is. Notoriety had an oasy win in the Shorts Handicap. Tho winner was offered for auction after the race, and was bought in by the owner for £l7.
