AUCKLAND’S FINANCES.

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night,

A special meeting of the City Council was held to-night to consider the financial position. The Mayor moved that a finance committee be instructed to confer with the city solicitor with a view of altering the incidence of taxation whereby the ordinary interest on th 6 water loan shall be charged to the water account, thus enabling the special rate to be reduced and general rate correspondingly increased without adding to the total amount of rates paid. He said the estimates showed that on the present rating basis they would go back over ,£4OOO next year, but the proposed alteration would provide nearly that sum for general purposes. The motion was carried. It was also resolved that the Town Clerk ascertain the position of the Fire Brigades Bill, and that a committee interview the Premier on the subject.
