During the twenty-live days ended January thirty-first, the Waihi Company treated seventeen thousand five hundred and eighty-seven tons of ore for fifty thousand four hundred ami forty-four pounds sterling, which is a record. The total from the mine to date is two million five hundred and fifty-one thousand eight bundled and thirteen pounds sterling. At a meeting re the disposal of funds from the recent floral fefc, it was decided that the net receipts, five hundred and thirty-six pounds, be divided as follows : One-third lo the Veterans’ Home, and the remainder to the Ladies' Benevolent Society. NAPIER, lav; night. A man named Sydney Henry Stevens, who arrived by steamer yesterday from Gisborne, attempted suicide by cutting iris throat in the police cell this morning. On the arrival of the steamer yesterday, lie claimed police protection, and enquiry on board showed that Stevens had been behaving strangely on the voyage down. He was accordingly locked up on a charge of lunacy. He came out of the cell at about nine this morning for a wash, and returned shortly aftei wards, but when the police opened the- cell at ten to take him to the Court lie was found to have attempted to cut Iris throat with a piece of glass. The wound was severe, but is not expected to prove fatal. A magnificent eruption of Waimaugu geyser, near Rotorua, occurred yesterday. The Hon. WAIPAWA, last night. At a joint meeting of the Waipawa anl Patangata Councils, it was resolved to protest against a further increase in the Harbor Board rate ; a'so to join all other local bodies jntrre.ried in petitioning Parliament to grant adequate representation to the county. It was contended that the basis of representation arranged in eighteen seventy-eight was unfair under the altered circumstances and increased valuations of country properties. WELLINGTON, last night. An attempt is being made here by the Salvation Army to establish a farm home where the vagrant class and ex-prisoners can be found employment in growing vegetables, etc., until work of some kind is obtained for them. The Government will probably be approached for a subsidy to enable the Army to purchase the land necessary near the city. In the Supreme Court, John Shanahan and Walter Simmons wpre found guilty of robbery with violence, and sentenced respectively to two and ahalf and two years’ hard labor. Chas Karland and James Cunningham, for theft and being illegally on premises, were each sentenced to eight months’ hard labor. Thei appeal of the Wellington Firemen’s Industrial Union against the decision of the registrar in refusing to register that body, on the ground that a. Seamen’s Union already exists here which men could join, has been disallowed by the Arbitration Court. ’ NELSON, last night. The Nelson Harbor Board election resulted as follows City seats : Messrs Trask, Fanning and Hanby ; country seals: Messrs Franklyn, Best and Field. The gross takings at the cricket mated Canterbury v. England total £763. fci DUNEDIN, last night. TV deputation from the Prcsbyleriajn Assembly waited on the Congregational Union this morning, re' union of the Churches, and formally presented a copy of the resolution passed by the Assembly at their meeting in Wellington last November.
