LICENSING CASES
(By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night,
At Balclutka to-day John Gibbons McDonnell, charged with unlawfully selling alcoholic liquors, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the liquor found to be confiscated. Defendant gave evidence on his own behalf. Ho said the liquor had been given him by his mother-in-law. He admitted that he had been previously fined £4O, and on another charge of being sent to gaol for ten days. Mr Hanlon, who appeared for accused, asked that his objection be noted that the evidence as to previous convictions had been improperly admitted at Balclutha. Alexander Cowie, a brewer at Caversham, was charged with sending a barrel of beer to Owaka without having on it distinctly written a printed statement that it contained liquor. Mr Cruiekshanks, S.M., was at first inclined to agree with counsel that storage duty was sufficient, but after inspection decided it was not. But as defendant evidently thought he was acting in accordance with regulations he dismissed the case.
